Like last year's festival, which included new-music godparents Yoko Ono and Sonic Youth, Pitchfork 2008 acknowledged veteran artists who remain influential, including a pair of Sunday headliners, Spiritualized and Dinosaur Jr.įriday was nothing less than a retro showcase, with hip-hop militants Public Enemy, low-fi rockers Sebadoh and post-punkers Mission of Burma each playing one of their vintage albums front-to-back. Despite bouts of rain that created massive mud puddles, it was a better-run Pitchfork all around, with more concessions and bathrooms and improved sound. They witnessed three days of music, which concluded Sunday, by 40 performers on three stages. The festival attracted 45,500 paying customers, plus 305 media from around the world. They're not, but then again they haven't had much practice performing in front of mammoth crowds. A couple of up-and-comers fell flat, notably Vampire Weekend, a pleasant enough band but lacking the stage presence to satisfy curiosity seekers wondering if this year's buzz band was really all that. Khan's already acting like a star, but after this performance, a lot more people are going to know about him.
